Dear WWLI Members,

As we look forward to what is in store for us in 2021, we must also look back at 2020 under the leadership of our past chair Sandy Lee. Our focus in 2020 was Engagement, Commitment, Communication and Transparency (EC2T).  However, as we all know, we were sidelined in March when the pandemic, social distancing, shutdowns, and virtual events became the new reality.

We adapted quickly by pivoting to virtual events and, under Sandy’s leadership, were able to host over 30 meaningful engagements for our members!  This is certainly a testament to our goals of EC2T so a big thank you to Sandy for her perseverance!

In 2021, we look forward to supporting, inspiring, and networking to help each of us accelerate our personal growth and networks. WWLI’s overall goal each year is growth and impact.  As an organization, we are committed to the growth of our membership, sponsorship, and overall learning.  We are also equally committed to deepening connections and relationships among our board members, committees, and strategic partnerships/sponsors. 2020 was a tough year due to restrictions from the COVID-19 virus, yet the organization did an amazing job of adapting and moving forward.  Let’s carry that momentum into 2021.

The mission and vision of WWLI is creating and sustaining membership for women leaders with common goals of expanding their networks and educational opportunities centered on professional leadership development.  With that in mind, we kicked off January with unveiling a new website and a lunch event focusing on the impact of COVID-19 on women in the workplace provided by Laine Thomas Conway, VP of Alight Solutions.   The new website has generated excitement and the event provided members with the solution of standing up for ourselves and others in the workplace as we adapt to work from home and new challenges with Covid-19.   We have four additional educational panels planned for the year:  the first is Women Dominating Healthcare-The New Frontier in March, followed by a C Suite panel in May, a commercial real estate panel in September and a Technology panel in November.  Additional details will be forthcoming.  We will be hosting our second annual ladies 9-hole golf tournament at the Country Club of Fairfax in August.  This will be an in-person event, giving us ample time to network, get some fresh air and exercise, and learn and enjoy a sport.  I hope everyone in WWLI will come out and join the fun!    Our events, membership, sponsorship, and communications committees are working together to create additional networking opportunities and are brainstorming to grow our membership during this difficult time.

Our Executive Women On Boards program also has a full agenda for the year which includes four modules during the year.  We also expect to add a couple of surprise events as the year progresses.  Our modules for 2021 include:  Creating Your Board Profile; Planting Seeds: Growing Your Network, Facilitative Leadership, Building Consensus, And Board Dynamics; and Board Recruiter Panel.  This program has rolling admission and you can join at any time.  If you are interested in securing a board seat now or in the future, contact us to learn more about this exciting opportunity.

I encourage each and every member to get the most out of your membership this year.  This includes reaching out to other members for deeper connections, inviting friends and colleagues to events, and using events to grow your personal or professional networks.  Difficult times make us stronger and as Prime Minister Golda Meir said, “Make the most of yourself by fanning the tiny, inner sparks of possibility into flames of achievement.”

I am excited about the coming year!
